Antony and the Johnsons
The Crying Light

Rating: 7.3/10.00
Recommended Tracks: 1, 2, 8, 9
RiYL: CocoRosie, Tindersticks, Rufus Wainwright, Devendra Bahnhart

The latest collection of gems by Antony and the Johnsons does not house many surprises, yet is a welcome return to the magical realm in which they exist. As is custom, an initial listen will be accompanied by a shudder and awe at any and all sound that Antony Hegarty produces, and any attempted review will fall short for words as its adjectives blush with inadequacy. Cotton Jones
Paranoid Cocoon

Rating: 7.2/10.0
Recommended Tracks: 7, 4, 2, 1, 9, 10
RiYL: Cass McCombs, Dr. Dog, Page France

Paranoid Cocoon has something really special. Like many of my favorite albums – Songs:Ohia’s The Lioness, Okkervil River’s Don’t Fall in Love with Everyone you See, and especially Cass McComb’s A – Paranoid Cocoon seems to be perfectly content without any specific trajectory; to just be a collection of songs, and is much better off for it. Cotton Jones already has his own style, straddling the line between pop and lo-fi country as he meanders through old-school psychedelia, Beatles-esque pop, bouncy folk songs and more. It’s this assured sense of style that makes the album unique despite its continual re-hashing. (more…)
